Our Story
About the Association
Guardians of Meagher County's shared past — a volunteer-driven 501(c)(3) nonprofit and steward of the historic Castle Museum & Carriage House.
Our History
The Meagher County Historical Association is a volunteer-driven nonprofit dedicated to discovering, preserving, and sharing the history of Meagher County, Montana. Its home is “The Castle” — an imposing Victorian mansion overlooking White Sulphur Springs.
The Castle was built in 1892 by businessman Byron Roger Sherman from hand-cut granite blocks hauled by oxen from the nearby Castle Mountains. Its twelve rooms featured hardwood floors, Belgian and Oriental rugs, Italian marble washstands, and crystal-and-brass light fixtures — a showcase of Montana's Gilded Age.
Sherman moved to California in 1902 and sold the home in 1905 to Michael Donahoe of Seattle, whose family lived there for decades. In 1960, the Donahoe heirs donated the building to the Meagher County Historical Association to be preserved as a museum.
The Castle was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. In the 1990s, the Association built the Carriage House behind it to shelter the carriages, sleds, and stagecoaches once kept in ranchers' barns — today home to a Canyon Ferry stagecoach, horse-drawn fire engines, a one-room schoolhouse, and an old-time bank.
